A Capital Quiz of Stately Proportions
Excellent!
You've clearly been studying all about the United States. You got 11/11 correct.
1
Correct!
The correct answer: B Bismarck
Your answer: B Bismarck
In 1873 a small railroad camp in present-day North Dakota was named Bismarck in honor of the German chancellor; by 1889 it had become the capital of North Dakota. The Northern Pacific Railway established the camp in 1872 to protect its crews as they laid track through the area. The following year the Northern Pacific named the camp after the then-ruling German chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, in hopes of attracting German investment in the railroad.

During the ensuing gold rush, Sacramento became a commercial and transportation center.

The name of the Oregon capital city, Salem, is the anglicized form of shalom, a Hebrew word for peace. It’s thought that the town’s settlers chose this word because the local Calapooya people had called the site Chemeketa, which means “place of rest.” Salem was made the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851 and remained the capital when Oregon became a state in 1859.

He would later become the seventh president of the United States.
